“Choosing ‘Good Trouble” with Joe Wegwert, Ph.D

ALL ARE WELCOME! You BELONG at Beacon – Spiritually open and intentionally inclusive since 1958.

In “Choosing ‘Good Trouble’: Social Justice Radicalism Meets White, Middle-Class Liberalism In Post-Truth America,” guest speaker Joe Wegwert examines how UUs might draw on their values, principles, and the concept of Truth to challenge the currents of post-truth politics in American culture. He poses central questions about UUs responsible search for truth and meaning in light of what he identifies as “toxic individualism, celebrated greed, environmental degradation, anti-intellectualism, and political threat and violence.” Amidst all this, can we guard against cynicism still building beloved community and advancing democratic aspirations? There are truths to claim about UUs radical/heretical heritage, and to face about our current identities “of (largely) whiteness, middle-classness, and niceness.” If Good Trouble is the way forward, how might we claim that? With music under the direction of Simon Cunningham with accompaniment provided by Pete Garcia.

Joe will extend the conversation immediately after the service from 11:15 to noon in the Rainbow Room. Please join in.

Joe’s background: UU member circa 1980s, Our Whole Lives (OWL) facilitator, public school teacher, and University professor (currently NAU) with academic focus on critical citizenship and social justice issues around race, gender, and sexuality.
